Tapas: Are they a good idea to build a restaurant around?

Trends play a crucial role in the success of restaurants, especially new ones. Many of the most successful establishments and franchises in the world have built themselves on the backs of the most popular trends at the time and have gained considerable momentum because of it, James Haidak explains.

Today, one of the biggest restaurant trends can be found in small plates. An increasing number of adult customers have been ordering snacks and appetizers alongside alcoholic beverages. And this has become the replacement for main meals.

One of the most popular of these snacks and appetizers is the savory Spanish favorite, tapas. Best experienced with wine or cocktails, tapas include fried squid rings or calamari, potato omelets, and cured ham, to name a few.

James Haidak mentions that more and more restaurants that have cuisine other than Spanish have been including dishes similar to tapas in their menus. A huge number of Japanese, Italian, and Persian eating establishments are now offering small-plate meals.

And since restaurant owners are primarily running a business, the tapas trend could prove quite a boost in sales. What James Haidak recommends though, is not straying from an already established menu if there already is one and make tapas a side offering. For those who are opening up a restaurant for the first time, it would be a good idea to have a tapas-style option on the menu.
