When it comes to developing a sound that stands out, DJs have to let creative juices flow while they experiment. Listening to a wide variety of music helps DJ find their musical identity. Beginner DJs often take skills improvement for granted. Brush up on the basics of beatmatching and cueing, which should be instinctive to every DJ. Mastery in these two areas of mixing helps a DJ to find their own sound without compromising quality.

For inspiration, listen to live mixes of other DJs. Observe the atmosphere shift throughout the set to know which songs work together and which mixes get audiences excited and dancing. Listening and understanding other DJs’ mixes is a way to exercise one’s sound muscle. At home, try out different effects. Some DJ software are equipped with an abundance of effects. Apply creative use of these effects to find the sound that best speaks to one’s own style.
